With reference to your letter of the 31st

December, 1901, 45994/1901, relative to the exchange of
military lands, Hong Kong; I am directed by the Secretary
of State for War to acquaint you, for the information of
Mr Secretary Chamberlain, that a telegram has been
received from the General Officer Commanding, Hong Kong,
in which it is stated that of the three exchanges, proposed
by the local committee of April 1900, the Governor accepted
two, but repudiated the third, viz:- that relating to the
Mount Austin site.
2. This statement appears to Mr Brodrick to be at
variance with the approval conveyed in paragraph 5 of the
Governor's despatch of 28th August, 1900, No.393, covering
the recommendations of the Committee, transmitted with
Colonial Office letter to the War Office of 3rd November, 1900, 31905/1900; but he is not in a position to throw
further light on the matter, pending the receipt of the
fuller information which will probably be contained in a
report forwarded by the General Officer Commanding on the
